Any breed or sex of cat and dog can develop a thymoma, but this cancer is most commonly diagnosed in domestic shorthair cats. Thymomas arise in older pets, and the average of diagnosis in cats is 12 years of age. Over 40% of dogs with thymoma develop myasthenia gravis and 13% a second tumour intercurrent with thymoma. In 86 to 100% of cases, a cranial mediastinal mass was observed on chest radiographs.
Thymomas are tumors or masses which can be either benign (non-invasive) or malignant (invasive) and are found in older dogs, with the mean age being approximately 9 years old. While there has been no particular breed predisposition for thymoma development, it seems that medium and large sized dogs are afflicted more often than smaller breeds. Myasthenia gravis has been reported in up to 47% of dogs with thymomas.8,11 However, when looking at dogs with myasthenia gravis, only 4.8% have a thymoma.12 In cats the opposite is true, with 4.7% to 6% of cats with a mediastinal mass having myasthenia gravis.13 However, if a cat has myasthenia gravis, a thorough workup should be performed to screen for a mediastinal mass, because it has been reported that as many as 52% of cats with myasthenia gravis have a mediastinal mass.14
Other causes of hypercalcemia in dogs, in an approximate incidence order as seen in practice, include vitamin D toxicosis, apocrine gland carcinoma of the anal sac, multiple myeloma, carcinomas (lung, mammary, nasal, pancreas, thymus, thyroid, vaginal, and testicular), and finally, certain granulomatous diseases (blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, schistosomiasis).
